Abstract

Brucellosis is primarily a zoonotic infection. Rarely transmission from infected mother to newborn is reported. The acquisition of brucellosis in newborn can be through transplacentally, during delivery or postnatally through human milk. Brucellosis was diagnosed in a 31 week, 1500gr infant which was presented to us with arthritis 34 days after delivery. At the same time her mother was presented with fever and arthritis and brucellosis is reported based on a positive seroagglutination test. The infant had been only breast-fed so transmission was probably by human milk or transplacentally. The patient was treated with rifampicin and co-trimoxazole for 6 weeks and she recovers completely. No relapse or chronic discase was noticed during 15 month follow up of patient. The brucellosis should be taken in the consideration in the diagnosis when a new born is presented with arthritis.
