Abstract

A modified intra medullar nail with axial compression for fractures of the long bones and a guide device for this procedure were introduced. Intra medullary nailing for appropriate fractures of the long bones is very popularized osteosynthesis technique. And osteosynthesis with compression plates and screws are used for a large field of traumatology. These two systems of osteosynthesis and their applications have innumerable advantages for fracture healing individually. But they have also some disadvantages for repairing of fractures. For example, intra medullary nailing requires reaming of the medullary canal of the long bones for stability and rigidity of osteosynthesis procedure. It is well known that intramedullary reaming disturbs to endosteal vessels. And this means that fracture union will be delayed. On the other hand, osteosynthesis with the compression plates and screws also damage to periosteal blood circulation. An intra medullar nail with axial compression minimizes these disadvantages and so rigid fixation, good alignment, rapid primary bone healing are obtained. The implants and equipment presented here were designed and produced for this study. They were applicated on some wooden models, cow's long bones and some disarticulated upper extremities of human. During this study, current literatüre about intra medullary nailing, reaming of medullary canal of bone and osteosynthesis with using compression effects were reviewed.
