Abstract

Intracranial hemorrhages are rarely seen in term neonates. A term male baby who is delivered spontaneously as the first child of a healthy mother and a father who had a convulsion at his sixth hour of postnatal life is presented. On physical examination, bulging anterior fontanelle was noticed. On cranial ultrasonography intraventricular hemorrhage and ventricular dilatation were detected. Hemorrhage in subarachnoid region and right posteriocerebral tissue were seen on cranial CT. Prothrombin time was normal, whereas activated partial thromboplastin time was prolonged. Factor VIII level was detected as 2.5% and the patient was diagnosed as hemophilia A. Af ter the replacement therapy with concentrated factor VIII the patient was discharged on his 23rd day of hospitalization. Besides the hemorrhagic disease of newborn congenital factor deficiencies, although rare, should be kept in mind as a cause of intracranial hemorrhage in term neonates.
