Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Medical education is a lifelong process of learning. In this sense, continuing medical education starts after graduation from the Faculty of Medicine and continues until the end of the end of one’s medical career. In this study, we prepared a questionnaire in order to find out which activities secondary health care hospitals specialists take part in with respect to scientific and continuing medical education activities.

METHODS

We gave a 25 item questionnaire to 120 specialists working in Kars State Hospital, Muş State Hospital and Bingöl State Hospital so as to find out which activities they participate in with regard to continuing medical education during and after their residentship.

RESULTS

When we analyzed the career plans of the specialists who take part in our study, we have found out that 50% of them consider being an academician and 23% working in private hospitals. The percentage of the specialists who worked on a scientific study apart from their thesis during their internship is 16.7. Whereas the average number of the regular scientific meeting attended during residentship is 2,23, many specialists didn’t attend a regular scientific meeting in a foreign country during that time. In one year, the average number of regular scientific meeting attended in Turkey during the period of specialization is 1,3, while the average number of regular scientific meeting abroad is 0,2.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

According to results we obtained, increase continuing medical education activities and scientific research of specialist working in secondary health care hospitals in Eastern Anatolian Region compared with their residentship process are outstanding. However we consider the participation to the proficiency exams and inadequacy of certification programs will be eliminated by the promotions and the facilities of medicine societies.
