Abstract
AIM: The present study aimed at investigating cases of poisoning admitted to our anaesthesıa Intensive Care Unit (A1CU) from the viewpoint of their demographic characteristics, type of poisoning and results of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The fıles of 112 patients hospitalized in our intensive care unit between 01.01.2008-31.12.2009 with a diagnosis of poisoning were screened retrospectively. Age, gender, duration of hospitaiization, APACHE II score, type of poisoning (drug poisoning, poisoning with organophosphate insecticides, food poisoning, poisoning with toxic gases, alchohol poisoning), results of treatment (successful treatment, unchanged condition, refusal of treatment, transfer to another unit within the hospital, referral to another hospital, death) were investigated. FINDINGS: A total of 2098 patients vvere admitted to the AICU within the 24 months' period between 01.01.2008¬31.12.2009 and 112 (5,3%) of these were diagnosed as cases of poisoning. Of these cases, 60 (53,6%) were female and 52 (46,4%) were male; mean age was 33,94±17,58 (15-81). 90 (80,4%) patients were presented at the AICU as suicide victims; 17 (15,2%) resulting from accidental poisoning, and 5'i (4,5%) due to excessive alcohol intake. 34 (30,4%) of the patients were successfully treated; 9 (8%) were discharged with no change in condition. 4 (3,6%) refusing treatment left the hospital on their volution. 52 (46,4%) were transferred to another unit within the hospital after initial treatment, and 2 (1,8%) were referred to another hospital for further investigation and treatment. 11 (9,8%) of the patients were lost. CONCLUSION: Of the 2098 cases admitted to the AICU within a period of 24 months 5,3% consisted of cases of poisoning. İt was found that suicide attempts through drug intake was the most frequent cause of poisoning. Females aged 15-24 constituted a group in which cases of poisoning were seen the more frequently. Multiple drug poisoning and antidepressants were the most common agents of drug poisoning. 11 (9,8%) of the patients were lost.
