Abstract
Aim: Transfusion-transmitted infections ar e the most encountered complications in transfusion practice. HBsAg, anti HCV and anti HIV tests are routinely used for screening in blood banks and the quality of these tests are important for transfusion safety. In this study, HBsAg, anti HCV, anti HIV tests ıvere analyzed in our blood bank laboratory and the results were checked with the external quality programme which is UK Neqas (United Kingdom) for transfusion safety. Methods: For this purpose, 36 specimens which were sent from UK Neqas (three specimens per month) in 2006 were tested. These results were evaluated in comparison with other national and international external quality programme results. Results: Two false positive results were obtained for HBsAg. Neither false positive nor negatiue results were detected for antiHCV and antiHIV 1,2. Sensitivity and specivity rates for antiHCV and HIV were found 100% for each. While sensitivity for HBsAg was 100%, specivity was found 91.66% Conclusion: The blood and blood products prepared in our blood bank are safe for HBsAg, anti HCV and anti HIV.
