Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the birth statistics and distribution of indications and the rates of cesarean sections between 2006 and 2011. Material and Method: We investigated retrospectively the hospital records of 52.929 patients who gave birth in İzmir Ege Doğumevi ve Kadın Hastalıkları Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, between 2006-2011. The distribution rates of normal birth, cesarean sections and indications, neonatal weight and gender were assessed. Findings: The number of total births between 2006 -2011 was 52.929. Our caesarean section rate was found 48.1 %. The main indication was previous cesarean section. Cesarean rates were found to be significantly increased per year after 2008. The difference was statistically significant in terms of cesarean section rates between 2007 and 2008 (p<0.03). Conclusion: Over the years, the rate of cesarean sections has increased worldwide. This increase was primarily attributed to the increased rate of previous cesarean section. To diminish the rate of ceserean sections, normal birth should be attempted for appropriate patients who have had uterine surgery.
