Abstract
Aim: Stab wounds of the gluteal region are uncommon injuries. These penetrating injuries can be potentially life-threatening. Thus, they deserve timely evaluation and interventional management. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate our experience with this special type of injury. Methods: Fourty-two patients who had gluteal penetration were included in this study. Patients were retrospectively reviewed for demographic data, type of injury and additional injuries, management and outcome. Results: One (2.3%) patient suffered a rectal injury, one (2.3%) a rectal injury plus ileum perforation, and one a sciatic nerve injury. Rectal injuries were treated with primer repair by transanal route plus diverting colostomy, one vuith ileum repair and, one wih sciatic nerve repair. The re was no postoperative complication or mortality. Conclusions: Penetrating injuries of the gluteal area can be potentially life-threatening. Meticulous evaluation and suspicion of a major injury during examination should prevent misdiagnosis and ensure early effective treatment.
