Abstract
Obesity is a disease seen with increasing freguency due to environmental and behavioural factors and is a concern of almost one-fourth of the adult population. Systemic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension are known to accompany. Various diet and exereise programs, restriction of calories and other medical therapy methods when used alone are ineffective and costily, especially in morbidly obese patients. Surgery for morbid obesity results with reduetion of weight for a period of time, but no matter which surgical method is used, the patients who discontinue their exercise programs and caloric restriction return to their previous weights. To overeome this, a multidisciplinary approach is needed. As to the surgical methods, dietary behaviours and comorbid diseases of the patients should be considered and laparoscopic methods with less complication risks should be preferred.
