Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the self-concept and wearing glasses in 7th class adolescents. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire study. The population includes 2676 students out of a total of 2795 adolescents, 7th class students, in four different urban elementary schools in Isparta. Outcomes are obtained by socio-demographic result form and Pierss-Harris Self-Concept scale. Percentage analysis, t-test and anova test were used for the statistical evaluation. Results: 1307 of 2676 students were girls and 1369 were boys. While 84.5% didn’t use glasses, 15.5% did. Self-concept, anxiety, behavioral and conformity, cognitive and school performance scores were found to be higher in the ones using glasses. Behavioral and conformity, cognitive and school performance scores were found to be statistically significant in the ones who use glasses (p<0.05). The physical appearance score was lower in the ones not using glasses, and this was also found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that, wearing glasses is a related to socio-demographic variations and lack of self-esteem. That’s why the ones who are wearing glasses using childhood/adolescence, should be evaluated carefully in psychological means, and these children/adolescents should get good support through these means. Family and school factors also should be considered while evaluating self-concept in adolescents who use glasses.
