Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the demographic features of the patients with cecum cancer who were complicated with obstruction. We also aimed to assess the safety of anastomoses performed under emergency conditions and mortality rates. Methods: The study included 86 patients with cecum cancer who were operated in 4th General Surgery Clinic in İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital from1993 to 2003. Demographic features of the patients, clinical stage of the cancer, operation procedures and complications, mortality rates and presence of chronic illness were recorded. Descriptive statistical assesment was used. Results: Mean age of the 86 patients with cecum cancer was 57.2 years. Of them 22(25.6%) patients underwent emergency operation because of mechanical bowel obstruction. 13 (59.1%) patients who required emergency operation had chronical medical problems such as diabetes. Right hemicolectomy and ileotransversostomy was performed in 20(90. 9%) patients. One (4.5%) died due to cardiopulmonary failure. Conclusions: We conclude that right hemicolectomy + ileotrasversostomy may be performed safely in cancers of cecum complicated with obstruction.
