Abstract
Spina bifida is the most common central nervous system birth defect encountered by the pediatric neurosurgeon. Marked advances in neuroimaging techniques have provoked a more precise definition and understanding of the neuroanatomic abnormalities. Early recognition and treatment of intraspinal lesions have reduced the incidence of acute and delayed neurologic deterioration.
