Abstract

INTRODUCTION

We planned in our study to search the need for excision of submandibular gland, which is in the neck 1b area, in early stage oral cavity cancer.

METHODS

In our clinic, 12 patients who undergone operation with the diagnosis of early stage oropharyngeal cancer was involved to this examination. We described the stage of the disease, lymph node metastases status and invasion of submandibular salivary gland with radiological examination and pathological results.

RESULTS

In study, patients ages were ranging from 48 to 75 years and study involved 3 patients were female and 9 patients were male. 6 of the patients were diagnosed cancer of tongue and 4 of them were lip cancer. The other localisation of cancers were retromolar region, and floor of mouth. Metastases of cervical lymph nodes were deteched at 4 of the patients. Submandibular salivary gland was histopathologically normally in all cases.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

In this study, the early stages of the oral cavity carcinoma in excised submandibular gland from histopathological of the cases there was no malignancy. We believe that this result should be validated by studies with increased the number of cases and the number of pathological sections from the salivary gland.
