Abstract

AIM: To determine the effectiveness of topiramate therapy in pediatric migraine patients. METHODS: 100 patients among ages of 9-16 admitted to the Neurology outpatient clinic of Akhisar Mustafa Kirazoğlu. Offıcial Hospital and Pediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic of İzmir Tepecik Teaching Hospital diagnosed as migraine wii: h 1988 International Headache Society criteria were followed up with migraine disability assessment score (MIDAS) for the severity of headache. After one month, topiramate therapy was started to the patients diagnosed as migraine, who had headache frequency more than once a week and /or a MIDAS score more than six. These patients were followed for 4-6 months. RESULTS: Patients received 64±22.5 mg/day mean dose of topiramate. MIDAS score was 8.39± 2.81 and 4.03±1.46 before and after therapy respectively (p< 0.001). Headache frequency was 7.86 ± 1.06 and 3.64± 0.97 before end after the therapy respectively (p< 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Topiramate treatment may be beneficial in migraine prophylaxis and multicenter studies are needed for confirmation.
