Abstract
There is no consensus regarding the preoperative management of gynecologic operations. For this reason we investigated the necessity of preoperative "routine" laboratory tests in benign gynecologic operations. Preoperative laboratory tests in 254 cases which were operated electively for benign gynecologic conditions were evalnated retrospectively. Hematologic investigation was enough before 40 years old, while chest x-ray might be helpful for patients older than 60. Our results suggest that a good history taking and full physical investigation will eliminate many unnecessary tests. The deeision regarding which laboratory tests should be applied depends on age. But one must take into consideration that the idea of many preoperative tests are unnecessary is valid only in the communities whose people are taking good health care.
