Abstract
AIM: This research has aimed to determine the prevalance of the vaginal infections in early pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vaginal smears besides the routine follow-up examinations had been taken from the first trimester pregnant patients admitted to our polyclinics between March 2007 and March 2008. The vaginal smears had been assessed in our pathology department's laboratory. 137 pregnant patients were included to our study. FINDINGS: 23 patients had bacterial vaginosis, 14 of them had candida vaginalis and 7 had trichomonas vaginalis. 3 patients had both bacterial vaginosis and trichomonas vaginalis. CONCLUSION: We suggest that vaginal smear examinations should be done in first trimester of pregnancy to determine the infections which can be treated easily.
