Abstract
AIM: to evaluate the results of the conservative treatment methods which we use in calcaneal fractures. MATERIAL and METHOD: Between the September-1992 and March-1996, 76 calcaneus fractures in 65 patients who were applied to our clinic were examined 56 of them (76%)were intraarticular, 20 of them (26%) were extaarticular and there was no open fracture. 9 of our cases were female (14%) and the other 56 cases were uniteral. By using lateral, axial, antero-posterior radiographics and especially for comminuted fractures by computerized tomography, in extraarticular fractures according to Essex-Lopresti classification all fractures were defined. All cases were treated with conservative methods. Mean follow-up period were 18 month (4-45). Our treatment results were managed according to Maryland's food score. RESULTS: There was no compUcation in our extraarticular fractures cases, AL of the working people returned their old work in 3 months. In patients with intraarticular fractures, 19 osteoporozis, 5 Sudeck atrophy, 15 peroneal tenosinovitis, 9 heel spuırs and abnormal bone formations, and 16 malunion were observed. Acto Maryland's foot score, in extraarticular fractures 76% excellent and 24% good results, in intraarticular fractures 22% excellent, 36.5% good 27% fair and 14.5% poor results were obtained. CONCLUSION: The conservative treatment of extraaticular and non-displaced intraarticular calcaneus fractures are successful. In tongue type furactures if there is no comminution. Essex Lopresti technique is satisfactory. In comminuted tongue type fractures treatment is operative, In joint is comminuted, the choice of treatment is conservative, open reduction will be appropriate if pasterior facet joint isn't comminuted.
