Abstract

By means of performing anastomoses even in dentate line; stapler gives the opportunity of making sphincter fuction saving procedures. This device was used in the operations for rectum carcinoma frequently. In our clinic, in 19 rectosigmoid carcinoma cases, after resection of tumor invaded portion by using stapler, we performed end to end colocolostomy procedures during last 3.5 years. 13 of these cases underwent anterior resection, 3 of them low anterior resection and the other three undenvent very low anterior resection. During postoperative period no excitus was seen. Nine complications were seen in seven cases in the early postoperative period (4 anastomoses leakage, 2 pneumonia, 2 atelectesia, 1 wound infection) and two complications in two cases in the late postoperative period (tumor relapse and stenosis). These data show that, stapler usage does not increase mortality and morbidity, instead it gives us the opportunity of performing sphincter saving procedures.
