Abstract

Oxbutynine applied intravesically has been reported to have excellent efficacy in the treatment of neurogerıic bladder dysfunction without significant systemic anticholinergic side effects. But, the topical effects of intravesical oxybutynine on the bladder are unclear and safety of the local tissue is not established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the topical effects of intravesical oxybutynine on an animal model. Intravesical oxybutynine was instilled into rat bladder in graded doses by repeated cathetererizations after 5 doses were given, on the thirteenth day, bladder were resected for histological study. In the high dose group, systemic absorbtion from the bladder caused weight loss and cachexia. In the same group, mucosal ulcerations were also detected on the bladders. In the other groups, there was no clear evidence of drug- related mucosal change on bladderwall. Our findings support that the usage of intravesical oxbutynine at appropriate dose is safe the local tissue.
