Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The use of computer and information technologies guiding nurses in all areas from documentation of health records to analysis of patient data has become more valuable day by day. The use of information technologies is important for developing information in nursing. This study was conducted in order to determine the use of computer and information technologies by nurses.

METHODS

Sample of the study, conducted with descriptive survey model, consisted of 107 nurses working in a university hospital between November 2015 and February 2016 and agreeing to participate in the study. “Individual Information Form” and “Evaluation Form on Use of Information Technologies in Nursing” prepared by researchers were used to collect data of the study. Number and percentage distributions were used to assess the data.

RESULTS

Mean age of the nurses participating in the study was 24.28, 73.8% were female, 75.4% were single, and 41.1% had associate’s degree. It was determined that nurses mostly use information technologies at workplace during the day and they spent meanly 3.78 hours daily on the computer. They expressed that they used mostly search engines as software product, used them for following news, up-to-date information and events on the internet, and used vocationally information technologies mostly for following laboratory results of patients.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

Even though nurses were closely interested in information technology, they were determined not to use it sufficiently in their professional lives. It is needed to eliminate deficiencies of nurses about education, to extend programs for patient care and nursing practices, and for nurses to utilize from advanced technologies such as use of tele-nursing and bedside computer.
