Abstract

INTRODUCTION

This study was conducted as a descriptive study to investigate the daily life activities and quality of life of elderly women with and without urinary incontinence.

METHODS

This study was conducted with women aged 65 years and older who applied to the geriatric polyclinic between May and September 2014. The sample of the study consisted of 161 women with and without urinary incontinence who agreed to participate in the study. The "Data Collection Form", "International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF)", "Barthel Daily Living Activity Index (DLA)" and "Lawton-Broody Instrumental Daily Living Activities Scale (EDLA)". The data obtained in the study were evaluated using the number, percentage, mean and Mann Whitney U test.

RESULTS

In this study, 62% of the women with incontinence were over 75 years old, 47.8% were married and without incontinence 44.9% were over 75 years old and 43.5% were married. Women with incontinence; the mean DLA score was 98.47 ± 7.97, EDLA was 14.05 ± 3.87, without incontinence; the mean DLA score was 99.49 ± 4.21, EDLA was 15.53 ± 2.21. A statistically significant difference was found in the mean EDLA scores between women with and without incontinence. There was no significant relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics of the women with and without incontinence and the average of the quality of life scoresThe average life quality score of women with incontinence was 8.48 ± 3.78.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

These findings show that the daily living activities of women aged 65 years and over with and without urinary incontinence are at a good level and that the incidence of urinary incontinence is low in incontinence patients.
